Full name:
Biodiversität in Bonn
Description:

AOO

Full name:
Area of Occupancy
Description:
Area of occupancy is defined as the area within its ‘extent of occurrence’ which is occupied by a taxon, excluding cases of vagrancy. The measure reflects the fact that a taxon will not usually occur throughout the area of its extent of occurrence, which may, for example, contain unsuitable habitats. The area of occupancy is the smallest area essential at any stage to the survival of existing populations of a taxon (e.g. colonial nesting sites, feeding sites for migratory taxa). The size of the area of occupancy will be a function of the scale at which it is measured, and should be at a scale appropriate to relevant biological aspects of the taxon.

AIS

Full name:
Alien Invasive Species
Description:
An alien species (= species, subspecies or lower taxon, introduced outside its natural past or present distribution) whose introduction and/or spread threaten biological diversity. Alien species that become invasive are considered to be main direct drivers of biodiversity loss across the globe. In addition, alien species have been estimated to cost our economies hundreds of billions of dollars each year.

WWAP

Full name:
World Water Assessment Programme
Description:
Hosted and led by UNESCO, the United Nations World Water Assessment Programme (WWAP) coordinates the work of 28 UN-Water members and partners in the World Water Development Report (WWDR). This key UN Water report is an annual review providing an authoritative picture of the state, use and management of the world’s freshwater resources. In addition to coordinating this significant UN report, WWAP monitors freshwater issues in order to provide recommendations, develop case studies, enhance assessment capacity at a national level and inform the decision-making process. WWAP seeks to equip water managers and key decision-makers with the information, data, tools and skills necessary to enable them to effectively participate in the development of policies. <br />

WRAS

Full name:
Web Reef Advisory System
Description:
(no longer updated) WRAS is an online application to input, view, and analyse Reef Check survey data. It calculates indicators of how good or bad a shape a particular reef is in, and what the underlying causes may be, based on Reef Check surveys. WRAS was developed in collaboration with WorldFish Center (ReefBase Project), University of Rhode Island, and the University of Southern California. We welcome any feedback on improvements or modifications of this first version of WRAS.

WBI

Full name:
Wild Bird Index
Description:
The Wild Bird Index (WBI) measures average population trends of a suite of representative wild birds, as an indicator of the general health of the wider environment. The WBI is an easy-to-understand indicator that can be calculated for different geographic areas and habitats. This means that different Wild Bird Indices (WBIs) can be produced for areas such as farmland and woodland, or inside and outside protected areas if suitable data is available. It is useful for analysis, interpretation of environmental issues and communication.
