Beschreibung:
The African Zoology Department from the Royal Museum for Central Africa (RMCA) has a unique taxonomic collection of African fauna, curating more than 10 million biological specimens with for instance 150.000 birds, 200.000 amphibians, 40.000 reptiles, 90.000 mammals, 950.000 fishes, 6 million insects and 1 million other invertebrates. It is one of the most important zoological collections from central Africa in the world. The collections originate for more than 80% from Congo, Rwanda and Burundi.

Length of the growing period
Beschreibung:
A general characterization of moisture conditions is achieved through the concept of length of growing period (LGP), i.e. the period during the year when both moisture availability and temperature are conducive to crop growth. Thus, in a formal sense, LGP refers to the number of days within the period of temperatures above 5°C when moisture conditions are considered adequate.

NEPTUNE

Ausgeschrieben:
The North-east Pacific Time-series Undersea Network Experiments
Beschreibung:
NEPTUNE Canada offers a unique and exciting approach to ocean science. Traditionally, ocean scientists have relied on infrequent ship cruises or space-based satellites to carry out their research. But NEPTUNE Canada is changing this. We’re the world’s first regional-scale underwater ocean observatory network that plugs directly into the Internet. People everywhere can ‘surf the seafloor,’ while ocean scientists run deep-water experiments from labs and universities anywhere around the world.

Vegetation Index
Beschreibung:
Vegetation indices are one of the primary sources for the observation and analysis of the Earth's surface , in particular the vegetation. It uses the red and near-infrared spectral region. For recording, portable hand-held or aircraft-or satellite-based multi-spectral sensors are used. The reduction of multispectral measure to a single value for the prediction and evaluation of characteristics of the vegetation. Examples of such features are leaf area, total biomass, fresh and dry biomass, chlorophyll content, plant height, grain or forage yield, plant stress. The methods developed to reflect the fact that living vegetation in the red spectral range (0.6 to 0.7 micron) light strongly absorbed, while in the near infrared range (0.7 to 1.1 microns) highly reflective. That means vegetation indices use the sharp increase of photosynthetic active vegetation reflectance from the red to near infrared range . Chlorophyll reflects near-infrared about six times more than in the visible spectrum.

Ausgeschrieben:
International Polar Year
Beschreibung:
The International Polar Year is a large scientific programme focused on the Arctic and the Antarctic from March 2007 to March 2009. IPY, organized through the International Council for Science (ICSU) and the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), is actually the fourth polar year, following those in 1882-3, 1932-3, and 1957-8. In order to have full and equal coverage of both the Arctic and the Antarctic, IPY 2007-8 covers two full annual cycles from March 2007 to March 2009 and will involve over 200 projects, with thousands of scientists from over 60 nations examining a wide range of physical, biological and social research topics. It is also an unprecedented opportunity to demonstrate, follow, and get involved with, cutting edge science in real-time.

Chlorophyll Ocean Globally Integrated Network
Beschreibung:
The aim of the project is to deliver products, namely maps of ocean chlorophyll and sea surface temperature, as indicators of the state of the ecosystem needed for ecosystem and fisheries management, and at some sites, a measure of light penetration into the ocean, which is needed, along with the other two variables, to calculate plankton primary production. The project identified three initial principal regional centres, in Latin America, southern Africa, and India linked by good communications to three northern centres in UK, the European Commission, and USA.

Ecosystem
Beschreibung:
An ecosystem consists of the biological community that occurs in some locale, and the physical and chemical factors that make up its non-living or abiotic environment. There are many examples of ecosystems -- a pond, a forest, an estuary, a grassland. The boundaries are not fixed in any objective way, although sometimes they seem obvious, as with the shoreline of a small pond. Usually the boundaries of an ecosystem are chosen for practical reasons having to do with the goals of the particular study.

ION

Ausgeschrieben:
Index to Organism Names
Beschreibung:
ION is unique in that it is the most complete source of organism names available, which reflects the focus of published literature. Organism names are a key element in organizing all biological information, but prior to the creation of ION, researchers had to check several disparate and incomplete name lists to find the information they need. No more - now they can save valuable time with the comprehensive answer: ION.
