North European and Baltic Network on Invasive Alien Species (NOBANIS)

The North European and Baltic Network on Invasive Alien Species (NOBANIS) is a gateway to information on alien and invasive species in North and Central Europe. NOBANIS covers marine, freshwater and terrestrial environments and provides:

1. a distributed but integrated database on introduced species in the region
2. a catalogue of the regulation relevant to invasive species in participating countries
3. a database of experts from the region
4. a literature database
5. connects to regional and global networks and projects of invasive aliens species

The participating countries: Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Faroe Islands, Germany, Greenland, Iceland, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway, Poland, North-western Russian Federation, Sweden.

Global Taxonomy Initiative: Workshop report, taxonomy for Biodiversity in Asia – Oceania

Published by the National Institute for Environmental Studies, Japan, this report documents the 2nd GTI regional workshop in Asia-Oceania, 9-10 October 2004. The workshop focused on generating project proposals for consideration by bilateral and multilateral agencies including the Global Environment Facility. 62 participants from 27 countries and economies representing various sectors developed 15 project concept papers and identified project champions. BioNET’s Secretariat and representatives from the ASEANET, EASIANET and PACINET LOOPs were proud to support this event through participation and co-sponsorship. Searchable Namibian Tree Atlas database

On the occasion of the official launch of the recently published Tree Atlas of Namibia, the searchable Tree Atlas database has been made available available on-line. Some 600 trees and other large woody plants are included in the database. Current functionality allows for retrieving maps of the Namibian distribution for each, as well as species lists for any 15'x15' grid square in the country.

GEO Tag der Artenvielfalt erfolgreich beendet

Informationen dazu finden sich auf der GEO Seite und bei der GTZ (Gesellschaft für technische Zusammenarbeit), die auch einen Tag der Artenvielfalt in Mali durchgeführt hat.

Diesemal war auch GBIF-International mit beteiligt: die Daten wurden online eingegeben und standen praktisch sofort weltweit im GBIF Netzwerk zur Verfügung! Das könnte der Beginn einer sehr fruchtbaren Zusammenarbeit sein.

GTI blüht auf!

Auf der SBSTTA 10* in Bangkok, Thailand, wurde mit großer Unterstützung der biodiversitätsreichen Staaten eine neue Empfehlung für die 8. Vertragsstaatenkonferenz (Mai 2006 in Brasilien) verabschiedet. Neben den mehr technisch-administrativen Fragen zur GTI, wurde beschlossen einen 'Guide to the GTI', einen Führer zur GTI, in direkter, allgemeinverständlicher Sprache abzufassen und in den sechs UN-Sprachen (Englisch, Französisch, Russisch, Chinesisch, Spanisch, Arabisch) zu verbreiten.

Bericht zur Stand der GTI-Implementierung in Deutschland

Seit der SBSTTA 10* ist auch der Bericht zum Stand der Implementierung der GTI in Deutschland online verfügbar. Dieser Bericht kann auf der Website mit den anderen Berichten verglichen und analysiert werden. Eine klasse Möglichkeit sich über den weltweiten Stand der GTI-Implementierung umfassend und schnell zu informieren. Insebsondere in Deutschland zeigt sich eine grosse Vielfalt der Informationsquellen: wichtig sind da beispielsweise das Bundesamt für Naturschutz, Zentralstelle für Agrardokumentation und -information, Wasserwirtschaftsämter etc. etc. Der Bericht liefert da einen guten Überblick (in Englisch).

In Deutschland stehen nicht nicht nur Tiere und Pflanzen auf den Roten Listen. Vom Aussterben bedroht sind inzwischen auch die Experten, die sie kennen. Systematische Artenkenntnis wird an den Hochschulen kaum noch gelehrt, freiwillige Helfer finden sich immer weniger.
