Index Nominum Genericorum (ING) The Index Nominum Genericorum (ING), a collaborative project of the International Association for Plant Taxonomy (IAPT) and the Smithsonian Institution, was initiated in 1954 as a compilation of generic names published for all organisms covered by the International Code of Botanical Nomenclature.

Australian Biological Resources Study: ABIF Flora ABIF-Flora is a Web-based source of authoritative information that aims to make freely available, taxonomic and biological information on all algae, bryophytes, fungi, lichens and vascular plants known to occur in Australia. It is an initiative of the Australian Biological Resources Study. ABIF-Flora presents an array of data including checklists, and censuses of various groups of organisms, searchable electronically. The core of each module is a list of accepted names for that group of organisms within Australia. To the core will be appended other information as it becomes available. ABIF-Flora also derives information and illustrations from the ABRS publications Algae of Australia, Flora of Australia and Fungi of Australia.

Families of Flowering Plants This package is generated from a DELTA database (Dallwitz 1980; Dallwitz, Paine, and Zurcher 1993). It comprises an interactive system for identification and information retrieval using the program Intkey (Dallwitz, Paine, and Zurcher 1995, 2000) (running under MS-Windows 95/NT or later), descriptions, illustrations, references, and other subsidiary material.

FLORIN Databases  FLORIN is an information system designed to deal with a wide range of data about plants: taxonomy and nomenclature, geographic distribution (incl. distribution maps generated automatically), herbarium and living collections, detailed information about plants collected in the wild, bibliographic data, plant images, etc. The System is based on comprehensive botanical data model and modern computer technologies (leading RDBMS with object-oriented extensions, cross-platform portability, client-server architecture, Internet/intranet, GIS, CASE-tools), due to close collaboration of botanists and software engineers on FLORIN Project.

GRIN Taxomony GRIN taxonomic data provide the structure and nomenclature for the accessions of the National Plant Germplasm System (NPGS). Many plants (37,000 taxa, 14,000 genera) are included in GRIN taxonomy, especially economic plants. A recent paper on GRIN taxonomy provides a thorough discussion of data standards and taxonomic philosophy.

Gymnosperm Database The Gymnosperm Database was established as an online entity in the summer of 1997 and has since grown steadily, getting its own URL (Conifers.org) in the summer of 1999. Currently the Database provides basic information (sometimes only a name) for all species and higher-ranked taxa of the gymnosperms, i.e., conifers, cycads, and their allies. You enter the taxonomic tree at the Family level and then navigate to the Genus, Species or sometimes Variety levels. At each level, information on the taxon at hand is provided, along with bibliographic citations that will take you to more detailed information about the taxon. Navigation through the taxonomic tree is achieved with the help of Forms.

Index Herbariorum Index Herbariorum, a joint project of the International Association for Plant Taxonomy (IAPT) and The New York Botanical Garden (NYBG), is a detailed directory of 3100+ public herbaria of the world and the 9500+ staff members associated with them.

Indices Nominum Supragenericorum Plantarum Vascularium The following listing of validly published extant vascular plant suprageneric names based on a generic stem may be divided into two parts. Names at and above the rank of family (except suborder) include all known to me to have been published from 1753 to the present. Suprageneric names at the rank of suborder and below the rank of family (e.g., subfamily, tribe and subtribe), however, are restricted presently to those known to me published from 1753 through 1899. The list contains just over 6500 names.

International Legume Database and Information Service Project to document and catalog world legume species diversity.

International Organization for Plant Information This provisional Checklist includes basic data for each species (or infraspecific taxon if present), with three levels of data present: (i) source datasets (the data shown as provided by the database owners or custodians), (ii) partly coordinated /edited entries, and (iii) fully coordinated entries.Users will access data by entering the taxon name into a query form on the screen. Initially, a version of the Checklist on disk (including a browser program) will be provided for users without WWW access (hard copy versions will also be produced). The basic data included initially depends on what is available from each source. However, we aim ultimately to include: genus + species (+ infraspecific epithet if relevant), author, protologue bibliographic details, type details, geographic distribution, and acknowledgement of source of data. The family name is also included (given as in the published Kew list, at least initially - that list is continually being refined).

International Plant Names The International Plant Names Index (IPNI) is a database of the names and associated basic bibliographical details of all seed plants. Its goal is to eliminate the need for repeated reference to primary sources for basic bibliographic information about plant names. The data are freely available and are gradually being standardized and checked. IPNI will be a dynamic resource, depending on direct contributions by all members of the botanical community.

Internet Directory for Botany The Internet Directory of Botany is an index to botanical information available on the Internet, compiled by Anthony R. Brach (Harvard University Herbarium, Cambridge / Missouri Botanical Garden, St. Louis, USA, www page), Raino Lampinen (Botanical Museum, Finnish Museum of Natural History, University of Helsinki, Finland; www page), Shunguo Liu (SHL Systemhouse, Edmonton, Canada; www page) and Keith McCree (Oakridge, Oregon; www page).

New York Botanical Garden: American Bryophyte Catalog The New York Botanical Garden American Bryophyte Catalog is a project to catalog all the specimens of bryophytes in The New York Botanical Garden Herbarium from the western hemisphere. Phase I of the project, nearing completion, will result in an electronic catalog of approximately 200,000 bryophyte specimens from Canada, Greenland and the United States, which are available for searching from this page. Phase II: Bryophytes of Central America, Mexico and the West Indies will involve the electronic cataloging of approximately 120,000 herbarium specimens of bryophytes. Phase III, which will catalog the NYBG bryophyte specimens from South America (approximately 140,000) is projected to begin in 2004. If sufficient funding can be secured, in the year 2007 we will complete the American Bryophyte Catalog, which will consist of approximately 460,000 specimen records. This total will represent 75% of the NYBG's holdings of bryophyte specimens.

PLANTS National Database The PLANTS Database is a single source of standardized information about plants. This database focuses on vascular plants, mosses, liverworts, hornworts, and lichens of the U.S. and its territories. The PLANTS Database includes names, checklists, automated tools, identification information, species abstracts, distributional data, crop information, plant symbols, plant growth data, plant materials information, plant links, references, and other plant information. PLANTS reduces costs by minimizing duplication and making information exchange possible across agencies and disciplines.

Uppsala Angiosperm System Recent cladistic analyses are revealing the phylogeny of flowering plants in increasing detail, and there is support for the monophyly of many major groups above the family level. With many elements of the major branching sequence of phylogeny established, a revised suprafamilial classification of flowering plants becomes both feasible and desirable. Here we present a classification of 462 flowering plant families in 40 putatively monophyletic orders and a small number of monophyletic, informal higher groups. The latter are the monocots, commelinoids, eudicots, core eudicots, rosids including eurosids I and II, and asterids including euasterids I and II. Under these informal groups there are also listed a number of families without assignment to order. At the end of the system is an additional list of families of uncertain position for which no firm data exist regarding placement anywhere within the system.

W3TROPICOS The site provides access to the Missouri Botanical Garden's VAST (VAScular Tropicos) nomenclatural database and associated authority files.

Amphibian Species of the World A comprehensive online reference including a world database.

Birds of the World Nomenclature Checklist The taxonomic sequence used here is fundamentally Sibley & Monroe. The data are expected to be of greatest interest to Museum managers, avian taxonomists, and academic ornithologists.

Catalog of Fishes The Catalog of Fishes covers more than 53,000 species and subspecies, over 10,000 genera and subgenera, and includes in excess of 16,000 bibliographic references. Entries for species, for example, consist of species/subspecies name, genus, author, date, publication, pages, figures, type locality, location of type specimen(s), current status (with references), family/subfamily, and important publication, taxonomic, or nomenclatural notes. Nearly all original descriptions have been examined, and much effort has gone into determining the location of type specimens. The Genera are updated from Eschmeyer's 1990 Genera of Recent Fishes. Both genera and species are listed in a classification using recent taxonomic schemes. Also included are a lengthy list of museum acronyms, an interpretation of the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature, and Opinions of the International Commission involving fishes.

EMBL Reptile Database This database is intended to provide information on the classification of all living reptiles by listing all species and their pertinent higher taxa. The database therefore covers all living snakes, lizards, amphisbaenians and crocodiles. It is supposed to be a source of taxonomic data, thus providing primarily (scientific) names, synonyms, distributions and related data. However, a limited number of species accounts contain links to external sources including pictures. The database has no commercial interest and therefore depends on contributions from volunteers. It is currently supported by the Systematics working group of the German Herpetological Society (DGHT).

FishBase A Global Information System on Fishes. FishBase is a relational database with information to cater to different professionals such as research scientists, fisheries managers, zoologists and many more. FishBase on the web contains practically all fish species known to science.

Mammal Species of the World The Mammal Species of the World (MSW) contains the names of the 4,629 currently recognized species of mammals, in a taxonomic hierarchy that includes Order, Family, Subfamily, and Genus. The information was taken from: Wilson, D. E., and D. M. Reeder (eds). 1993. Mammal Species of the World. Smithsonian Institution Press, 1206 pp.

NEODAT II Project The Inter-Institutional Database of Fish Biodiversity in the Neotropics (NEODAT) is an international cooperative effort to make available systematic and geographic data on neotropical freshwater fish specimens deposited in natural history collections in the New World and Europe. The Project is funded by National Science Foundation grants to the University of Michigan (UMMZ), the American Museum of Natural History (AMNH) and the University of Kansas (KU). Currently 29 institutions in South America, Central America, North America, West Indies, and Europe participate in the project. Over 300,000 records have been captured and are accessible through project databases. There are nearly 2,000 references in the original species description literature database. We plan to increase the usefulness of NEODAT collection data by further standardization, provision of new links to specimen descriptions and types, and online access to rare literature. NEODAT II will continue to be an international, multi-institutional cooperative effort. All project deliverables will be made available to the international research community through the Internet, or other appropriate technologies.

South American Cichlidae: Name Database This database includes all nominal genera and species of South American cichlids, with reference to the original description, the type locality for each species, and the type species and gender for genera.
