Schmetterlinge - Lepidoptera - Butterflies and Moths

NEW:: The Global Butterfly Information System GART/GLOBIS. The aim of the GART project is to provide access to general information about butterflies on the basis of a global taxonomic catalogue. In a first step, a global, fully synonymic species register for two families of butterflies, Swallowtails (Papilionidae) and Whites (Pieridae), will be developed based on comprehensive taxonomic databases for these two butterfly groups.

The Hyles euphorbiae 'complex' is analysed in more detail with regard to ecological and biological factors. With about 71 percent of the region's sphingid taxa being endemic, the treatment of the western Palaearctic as a distinct sub-region of the Holarctic is justified. The zoological and botanical delimitation of the sub-region is given and a small gazetteer is provided. In English.

The Noctuoidea include the Notodontidae (Prominents), Arctiidae (Tiger Moths), Lymantriidae (Tussock Moths), Noctuidae (Cutworm Moths), and Nolidae. Unfortunately, only a few groups of moths are popular with amateur collectors so distributional information on most families remains rather spotty. Popular groups are the Hawk or Sphinx Moths (family Sphingidae), the Giant Silk Moths (family Saturniidae), Tiger Moths (family Arctiidae), and a group of cutworm moths called Underwing Moths (family Noctuidae: genus Catocala). Except for the Tiger Moths and Underwing Moths, the Noctuoidea remain poorly collected. In English.
