MeDaCollect :: Meta-Datenbanken über Biologische Sammlungen

MeDaCollect (Meta-Data on Collections) ist die Meta-Datenbank über biologische Sammlungen in der Schweiz. Sie wurde vom Forum Biodiversität Schweiz in Zusammenarbeit mit Fachleuten entwickelt.

Die Idee für eine Meta-Datenbank über biolgische Sammlungen ist auf folgendem Hintergrund entstanden:

In Museen, Instituten, Herbarien sowie bei Privatpersonen lagern unzählige Sammlungen der verschiedensten Organismengruppen. Sie stellen eine ausserordentlich wichtige Grundlage dar für systematisch-taxonomische Forschungsprojekte, Inventarisierungen, langfristige Monitoring-programme und Erfolgskontrollen von Massnahmen zur Erhaltung der biologischen Vielfalt. Leider sind genaue Informationen über diese Sammlungen oft nur einer einzigen Person bekannt und die Informationen dementsprechend schwer zugänglich.

Zur Verbesserung dieser Situation wurde diese Meta-Datenbank aufgebaut, die es jedermann/jederfrau (Fachleuten, Studierenden, interessierten Laien etc.) ermöglichen soll, rasch und zielgerichtet an die gewünschte Information heranzukommen.

MeDaCollect erfasst in der Schweiz vorhandene organismische Sammlungen und enthält Angaben über deren Vorhandensein, Zustand, Dokumentation und Zugänglichkeit.

Hauptziel von MeDaCollect ist es, eine Person, welche eine bestimmte Information sucht, möglichst direkt an die jeweilige Kontaktperson zu verweisen, ohne dass lange Umwege über Drittpersonen gemacht werden müssen.

Universitätsmuseen und -sammlungen. Überall auf der Welt verfügen Universitäten über Museen und Sammlungen, in denen Millionen von Objekten für Forschung und Lehre aufbewahrt werden. Viele dieser Sammlungen sind nicht nur für die Wissenschaft, sondern aufgrund ihrer kulturellen Bedeutung und Ausstrahlung auch für die breitere Öffentlichkeit von großem Wert.

BIOSIS - Nomenclatural Glossary for Zoology This glossary is based on a text intended to aid indexers in the production of nomenclatural entries for the Zoological Record, the index to world zoological literature published by BIOSIS and the Zoological Society of London. It covers terminology commonly encountered within publications dealing with the systematics and nomenclature of animals. This version of the glossary has recently been extended to include additional terms listed in the glossary of the new Fourth Edition of the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature published in September 1999, and Article numbers given within definitions refer to this Code.

BioTech's Life Science Dictionary This free resource was developed by our staff members and contributors and is still very much under construction. Currently, most of our 8300+ terms deal with biochemistry, biotechnology, botany, cell biology and genetics. We also have some terms relating to ecology, limnology, pharmacology, toxicology and medicine. Don't expect to find common or exotic animals here; there are far too many species to cover even a fraction in a resource like this. However, we've included medically- and biotechnologically-relevant organisms such as bacteria, worms, fungi, and some plants.
