National legislation on Biodiversity

National legislation on Biodiversity and regulations with relevance to taxonomy which each GTI NFP should look into.

World and General

ECOLEX is an information service on environmental law, operated jointly by FAO, IUCN and UNEP. Its purpose is to build capacity worldwide by providing the most comprehensive possible global source of information on environmental law. This unique resource, which combines the environmental law information holdings of FAO, IUCN and UNEP , seeks to put this information at the disposal of users world-wide, in an easily accessible service, employing modern technology.

IUCN Environmental Law Programme. The mission of the IUCN Environmental Law Programme (the ELP) is: To advance sustainability through the development of legal and policy concepts and instruments, and through building the capacity of societies to develop and implement environmental law and policy, in furtherance of the IUCN Mission.

Brazil

The Research Program in Biodiversity (PPBio) is a program that arose from the Secretary of Policies and Programs in Research and Development (SEPED), of the Ministry of Science and Technology. The program responds to concrete demands of Brazilian society and is developed in accord with the principles of the Biological Diversity Convention, National Biodiversity Policy (Decreto 4.339, of 22/08/2002), and priorities arising from the National Conference on Science and Technology of 2002.

Created in 2004 (Portaria MCT nº 268, of 18/06/2004, modified by Portaria MCT nº 383, of 15/06/2005), to create an investment strategy for science, technology, and innovation, which determines priorities, integrates skills in diverse fields of knowledge, and generates, integrates, and disseminates information about biodiversity for diverse end-users.

The objective is to establish a biodiversity research agenda in Brazil that promotes a favorable environment for the development of new bio-products and bio-processes focusing on conservation and the sustainable use of biodiversity, and that democratizes the knowledge generated in the process.

The execution of this program must be intimately connected to other actions in the field of research and development in biodiversity, at both the federal – such as the Brazilian Molecular Ecology Program for the Sustainable Use of Amazonian Biodiversity (PROBEM) and the Project of Conservation and Sustainable Use of Brazil’s Biological Diversity (PROBIO), both coordinated by the Ministry of the Environment – and state levels – for example, the Research Program in the Characterization, Conservation, Sustainable Use of the Biodiversity of São Paulo (BIOTA-FAPESP).

PPBio has a national scope and has been implemented in the Amazonian and Semi-arid regions, with future plans for implementation in all the regions and biomes of Brazil.
